Master Mathematics
Content, Keyfacts, Specialities
Disclaimer: The Master Mathematics is held partly in german. You therefore need very good german skills to enroll in this program. There are also the english taught scientific computing as well as the mathematics of machine learning and data science masters, for which you don’t need german skills.
Kurzbeschreibung
„A mathematician is a machine which turns coffee into theorems“ – Paul Erdős
The mathematics master delves into more advanced topics, building on the knowledge obtained in the bachelors. You specialise in at least one branch of mathematics and gain insights into current research topics.
Specialities in Heidelberg
The mathematic master is divided into the following branches:
- Algebra und Arithmetic
- Applies Analysis and Modelling
- Geometry und Topology
- Complex Analysis, automorphic Forms and Mathematical Physics
- Numerics and Optimisation
- Statistics and Probability Theory
Mathematical Physics, Applied Analysis/Partial Differential Equations, Geometry as well as Numerics and Optimisation are especially worth mentioning. The program also allows for a lot of choices in your studies.
Application and Preparation
Application
To be admitted to the study program, you need a Bachelor in Mathematics or an equivalent degree, with a german grade of at least 2,7. As the master is partly held in german, you will also need to submit a proof language proffiency in german.
For the application you must submit the following documents:
- Diploma or Transcript of Record with at least 150 LP of your bachelor degree
- Letter of Motivation containing a resume
- Proof of german language profficency
The application deadline usually is the last day of the previous semester, so the 30.09. and 31.03. However for international applications we advise to apply before to find a suitable accommodation and apply for a visa. You can find more information on the website of the degree program.

Structure of the Program
Exemplary Course of Study
In your studies you have to take the following modules:
- Compulsory/Compulsory Elective Modules (48 LP)
- 2 Seminars (each 6 LP)
- Lecture in the area of application (16 LP)
- Interdisciplinary courses (6 LP)
- Master thesis (30 LP)
- Presentation of the master thesis (8 LP)
It is generally useful the take all subjects except the master thesis and the presentation of the master thesis in the first three semesters. Then you can ideally use the lecture free period of the third semester and the fourth semester to work on your master thesis and its presentation. It is also common to study for more than four semesters and hear additional lectures or less lectures per semester.
One is required to take one applied and pure mathematics lecture each. Otherwise there are compulsory lectures and you can choose your lectures and seminars freely. Additionally you can write an application, such that the lectures in the area of applications are replaced by mathematics lectures.
You can find more information about this on the website of the degree program and in the module handbook.
