Disclaimer: The Bachelor Mathematics is held in german. You therefore need very good german skills to enroll in this program. There is also the english taught scientific computing as well as the mathematics of machine learning and data science masters, for which you don’t need german skills.
Kurzbeschreibung
“The mathematics you will encounter here at the university can only be compared to high school mathematics to a limited extent. It is characterized by its axiomatic structure, precise mathematical language, and high level of abstraction”
This doesn’t mean that we only work with the (grey? definitely not!) theory. A lot of care is given to the structural aspects. All statements will be rigorously proven. This is also one of the reasons why high school graduation exam scores in math are, in fact, not at all a measure of a student’s aptitude for studying math.

Specialities in Heidelberg
In Heidelberg you can specialise yourself in pure as well as in applied mathematics. In both areas there are leading fields in Heidelberg. For applied mathematics, this is for example scientific computing and numerical Simulation.
The area of application contains 24 of 180 LP of you bachelor-degree, which usually equates to at least three modules.

Application and Preparations
Application
Der Mathematics Bachelor in Heidelberg is not access restrict and without any access exam. Immatriculation is possible until 30.09. If you are not a german citizen you have to apply before 15.07. and you also need a proof of german language proficiency.

Preparation
Fundamentally there is no preparation needed, aside good knowledge of mathematics from school. However this will not be assumed and everything will be done from the ground up. However we strongly recommend you to participate in our “Vorkurs”. It takes place the first two week before each winter semester and it introduces you into some basics about university mathematics. This will help you with the start of your studies. Additionally it also contains a lot of social events to meet your fellow students, the city and the campus.
Vorkurs
The Vorkurs contains apart from the mathematical side also tips regarding IT-Systems of the University, game nights, hikes, and a bar tour.
The Vorkurs consists of two parts:
1. the Programmiervorkurs. It takes place three weeks before your studies start. It is aimed at beginners that have never programmed before. As the places are limited, you will have to register for this part in advance.
2. the general Vorkurs. It takes place three weeks and includes theoretical courses, particularly in the field of mathematics. This period also features social events, which are very helpful to attend in order to network and have fun.
Structure of the Program

This course of study should be taken as an example. It is possible that this will change for you, depending on the lectures you take.
In all cases it is important to pass “Lineare Algebra 1” and “Analysis 1” until the end of the third semester, as they are the “Orientierungsprüfungen”. Failing to do this will result in exmatricullation. It is also not uncommon to finish the degree in over six semesters.
